Based only 30 miles from London and with great access from the M11 motorway, Bishop’s Stortford is a great place to catch the latest films, experience local theatre and dance, or enjoy live music and comedy at some superb venues. Covering the whole entertainment spectrum from international musical superstars all the way through to comedy and the traditional pantomime, the town of Bishop’s Stortford in Hertfordshire has something for all ages and tastes.

The main centre of the entertainment world in the town is the Rhodes Arts Complex, which re-opened after a £3 million rebuilding and refurbishment in November 2005. It offers an exciting and varied programme, including concerts, theatre, drama and dance classes for adults and children, plus a café/bar. There are also regular big screen showings of the latest as well as classic films and is home to the annual Bishop’s Stortford Pantomime. Held over the Christmas period, the panto is always a fantastic treat for all the family and is often sold out. The Complex is also home to the Bishop’s Stortford Museum.

Now an integral part of Bishop’s Stortford life, the original part of the main building on South Road was the birthplace of Cecil Rhodes, financier, entrepreneur and founder of the De Beers diamond company. However, during the 1960’s it was known as The Commonwealth Centre, and was a highly regarded national music venue. Confirming its claim to a strong musical heritage, such performers who appeared there during this time include David Bowie, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, Gene Vincent, The Yardbirds, Billy Fury, & The Tornados.

For live music, the other main venue apart from the Rhodes Arts Complex, is the Half Moon Pub, a traditional establishment located in the heart of the town. Along with serving excellent real ales, they have weekly Jazz sessions on a Monday, Rhythm & Blues sessions on a Wednesday, and an Acoustic Club on Fridays, so there is always something to be enjoyed at this friendly venue.

The Bishop’s Stortford Music Festival, held over the weekend of the first Bank Holiday in May at St. Mary’s Catholic School, is quickly becoming bigger and better each year. Last years event saw more than 3,000 people in attendance over the two days to watch 66 live acts perform. The festival has two stages, one for rock music and the other for just about everything else, plus an acoustic marquee and an arts marquee. There is also a beer tent with an open mic. providing impromptu music sessions and comedy.

Cinema is also a popular form of entertainment in Bishop’s Stortford. The Empire Cinema is currently the only cinema in Bishop’s Stortford and was opened in 2000. It was the first time in 23 years that the people of Bishop’s Stortford could visit their own cinema in the town after the ‘Granada’ was closed down in 1977.

The Empire Cinema, until recently Cineworld, is based in Anchor Street within a complex also containing a McDonalds, Chicago’s, a Health Club and a Lakeside Superbowl. Comprising of 6 screens, one with 3D capabilities, The Empire provides comfortable surroundings, disabled access, and all the usual refreshments, whilst showing all the latest films and blockbusters. They also still offer the traditional Saturday morning movies for kids, with an admission charge of just £1 for children & adults?
